HISTORY OF UPLOAD:DOWNLOAD (UD)

THE STORY BEHIND

Upload:Download (UD) was conceived through a Researcher in Residence Programme held the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan (http://faam.city.fukuoka.jp/).

The project was initiated by Hasnul J.Saidon and Roopesh Sitharan during Hasnul's involvement with the residency programme at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum,Japan from October to December 2003.Central to the project is the theme of global communication and cross-cultural encounters.

It is a part of an experimental research project coordinated by Hasnul J Saidon, the Sonneratia Art Camp Director and Exhibition Curator (http://www.sonneratia.org). In the initial stage, UD project was jointly participated by the FAAM at Japan and the Sonneratia Team in Kuala Lumpur. The outcome of the project revealed undiscovered teritories of research areas on the internet technology.

The"UPload:DOWNload" project is now being open for global participation with the interest in analyzing and exploring the potential and implication of the virtual networked society.

Currently Hasnul is lecturing at USM (University Sains Malaysia) and working on his research covering the currrent new media art scene in the South East Asia Region.

Roopesh Sitharan is associated with MMU (Multimedia
University). He is the webmaster and researcher for the UD project. He also operates as an independent artist working on online and creative digital works.

THE ORGANIC CONTENT

The artwork is produced with simple process of uploading of content from participating artist from one end which serves as a content for the participating artist at the other end to download and work on the particular content and vise versa. The process is
continuous and ever growing and evolving.

A good example would be the interFACES which required the Malaysian artist to upload the portrait images of themselves. The portrait images is later downloaded by the artist at Japan and manipulated turning it into a typical and stereotyped faces of the
particular artist's countrymen (refer "view works").The process is continuous and simultaneous.

In this collaboration artwork, the participants from both sides provide the content of their interactivity themselves, even if this is mediated by database of images and the process of upload and download.

Both the images from the participant are unstable. All manipulations of portraits into their particular countrymen
are unique thus contributing to the aesthetics of the particular project. It creates a scenario whereby "The Participant is the Content is the Participant"

TYPES OF ARTWORKS

There were 4 sub-projects or assignments for UD, namely :
· interFACES
· BrandconTEXT
· cITy stream
· SoulBITS
(Details of each project explained when you login to the site)

The online nature of the project encouraged the process of collaboration to be continuously done causing the artworks to be constantly changing and evolving. Nevertheless, there are basically four types of artworks created from the sub-projects:
· Digital drawings and images (stills)
· Streamed videos
· Flash animations
· Sounds and music

Due to some unavoidable circumstances, only the "interFACES" and "BrandconTEXT" was executed during the collaboration between the Malaysian and Japanese participants.
